Hi, I’m Kian — the one person behind VinUnpack.
“Startup” is a nice word for it. A more honest description is that I’m trying to build a way to make a living by making small tools that are genuinely useful. It hasn’t worked yet. I’m still building.
VinUnpack is a free VIN decoder. Type in a 17-character VIN and it shows the model year, make, plant and country, plus the model and engine for the makes the public data covers. There is no account to create and nothing to install: open the page, use the tool, close the tab.
Most VIN lookups send you through several pages, a sign-up form or a payment before you see anything. This one runs in your browser, shows what it can, and says plainly when the public data does not cover a field.
A few honest notes
- It is built and maintained by one person, in the hours I can find.
- It may be rough around the edges sometimes. If something looks broken, it probably is, and I would like to hear about it.
- I would rather get “this doesn’t work” than hear nothing at all.
