Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
VinUnpack (the “Site”) is available at https://vinunpack.com. The Site is operated by Kian, an individual (“I”, “me”, “my”). For the purposes of the EU and UK data protection laws, I am the data controller for personal information processed through the Site. You can contact me at [email protected].
2. Information I collect
(a) Information you give me. If you email me, I receive your email address, any name you include, and the content of your message.
(b) Information collected automatically. Like most websites, the Site and its hosting provider may automatically collect technical information, including your IP address, browser type and version, device type and operating system, the page you came from, the pages you view, the date and time of your visit, and a general location derived from your IP address. Server logs may record this information.
(c) The VIN you enter, and shared result links. Decoding runs entirely in your browser. The VIN you type is never uploaded to me, never sent to an advertising or analytics provider, and never written to cookies or browser storage. If you choose to share a result, the link contains the VIN in its address (for example, https://vinunpack.com/?vin=...). Opening such a link sends the VIN to your browser and to the site’s hosting provider as part of the page request, and your browser may keep it in its history. Standard access logs at the hosting provider, which may include the requested URL, are kept for no more than 30 days. I do not use the VIN for anything else, and analytics page addresses are recorded with the VIN removed. Share links are created only when you choose to copy or share them.
(d) Cookies and similar technologies. See Section 4.
3. How I use information
I use the information described above to:
- operate, maintain and secure the Site;
- understand how the Site is used and improve it;
- display advertising and measure how it performs (see Section 5);
- respond to your messages;
- comply with legal obligations and protect my legal rights.
Where EU or UK law applies, I rely on these legal bases: your consent (for advertising and other non-essential cookies), my legitimate interests (running, securing and improving the Site, and responding to messages), and compliance with legal obligations.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. Some are session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser; others are persistent cookies, which stay for a set period. Similar technologies include pixels and local storage.
The Site uses cookies for the following purposes:
| Type | What it does | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps the Site working and remembers your cookie choices. | The Site / consent tool |
| Analytics | Helps me understand how visitors use the Site. | Google (Google Analytics) |
| Advertising | Shows ads, limits how often you see the same ad, and measures ad performance. | Google and its advertising partners |
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block all cookies, some parts of the Site may not work as intended. Where the law requires it, I ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies, and you can change or withdraw that consent at any time through the consent banner, the Cookie settings link in the footer, or by emailing me.
5. Advertising and Google AdSense
The Site uses Google AdSense to display advertisements. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and/or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to the Site and/or other sites on the Internet.
- Depending on your consent and settings, you may see personalized ads (based on your interests and browsing history) or non-personalized ads (based on the content of the page, your general location and similar contextual information).
- You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings at google.com/settings/ads. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices (United States) or youronlinechoices.com (European Union).
- If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland: I ask for your consent through a Google-certified consent management platform (CMP) before personalized ads and advertising cookies are used. If you decline, you will still see ads, but they will be non-personalized. Non-personalized ads may still use cookies for purposes such as frequency capping, aggregated ad reporting and fraud prevention. You can change your choices at any time through the consent banner.
- For more information about how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
6. Analytics
The Site uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google, to understand how visitors use the Site. Google Analytics collects information such as the pages you visit, how long you stay, your approximate location, and your device and browser type, using cookies and similar technologies. Google processes this information on my behalf.
You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. For more information, see Google’s Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
7. Links to other websites
The Site may contain links to third-party websites, including X. I do not control those websites, and their privacy practices are governed by their own privacy policies. I encourage you to review them.
8. How information is shared
I do not sell personal information. I may share information only in these situations:
- Service providers. Hosting, advertising (including Google), analytics and email providers that help me run the Site, and only as needed to provide those services.
- Legal requirements. If required by law, court order, or to protect my rights, your safety or the safety of others.
- Business transfer. If the Site or its assets are transferred, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.
- California residents. I do not sell personal information for money. Some advertising cookies may be considered “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law, and you can opt out as described in Section 9.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights:
- EEA and UK (GDPR / UK GDPR): access your information, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to processing, receive a portable copy, and withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
- Switzerland (FADP): you have similar rights under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection, including access, correction, deletion and objection.
- California (CCPA / CPRA): know what personal information is collected, delete it, correct it, opt out of its sale or sharing, limit the use of sensitive personal information (I do not intentionally collect sensitive personal information), and not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. You may use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf.
- Other regions: similar rights may apply under your local laws.
To exercise any of these rights, email me at [email protected]. I may need to verify your identity before responding, and I will respond within the time required by law. Please note that some information collected by Google for advertising is controlled by Google, so you may also need to use the opt-out tools linked in Section 5.
10. Children’s privacy
The Site is not directed to children under 13, or a higher age where local law sets one (for example, up to 16 in some EEA countries). I do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to me, please email me and I will delete it. Parents and guardians are welcome to contact me with any questions.
11. Data retention
I keep personal information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy. Server logs are kept for no more than 30 days unless needed for security or legal reasons. Emails are kept for as long as needed to handle our conversation. Advertising and analytics data are retained by Google according to Google’s own policies.
12. Security
I take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure, and I cannot guarantee absolute security.
13. International transfers
The Site is accessible worldwide, and information may be processed in countries other than the one you live in, including countries where Google and my hosting providers operate. Where required by law, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission.
14. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” (DNT) setting. There is no common industry standard for how websites should interpret DNT, so the Site does not currently respond to DNT signals. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, I intend to treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information where the law requires it.
15. Changes to this policy
I may update this policy from time to time. When I do, I will post the new version on this page and update the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be described on this page. Please review this policy occasionally.
16. Contact
